Welcome to Newport, Virginia!
Newport Recreation Center
The Newport Recreation Center, built as the public high school in 1933, serves as the community center in a village of approximately 900 households.
Closed as an elementary school in 1982, the buildings were afterward acquired by the Newport Community Action Committee (NCAC), a non-profit community based organization.
The Newport High School building is an architecturally significant structure that contributes to the Historic Village of Newport and the Greater Newport Rural Historic District. Since the closing of the school, the center continues to play a key role in the lives of the people of Newport. It is employed as a site for community meetings, dinners, concerts, social gatherings, classes, youth activities, art studios, the Newport Agricultural Fair, Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad, Giles County Wellness fitness classes, The Mayapple School for preschoolers, and is also host to the Newport Library and Museum.
As you browse your way through our website, we hope to take you back to another place and time when Newport was once a boom town, when you could see the dust from the winding dirt road being kicked up by horse-drawn carriages, and when families sat on their porches just to hear the "peeper" frogs perched off the shoulders of Sinking Creek. Enjoy your visit!
